No End to Beginnings & Endings
by Gordon Coombes

No end of babies crying
no end of dogs scratching
at the door to be let in or out
no end of paranoid hyper-vigilant dogs
barking & howling at strangers
in the middle of the night
barking at the paper delivery boy
the milkman or postman
no end to bill collectors calling
demanding their money
no end of hearing good news & bad news
of someone falling in love
of someone falling out of love
of someone being pregnant
of someone being born
of miscarriages
of someone being ill
needing so much help
of someone a relative or a friend
a stranger dying
of marriages & divorces
of someone barely getting by
of someone landing the great job
of someone stuck in a rut
in a mind-numbing soul-destroying
dead end job
of someone graduating high-school
community college or university
of someone dropping out
having no direction
of someone stuck frozen
unable to leave to move beyond
where they are at
of someone daring taking chances
following their own dreams -

doing more than anyone expected
becoming a lawyer a social-worker
a psychotherapist a teacher a bureaucrat
running for public office & winning
becoming a respected leader
of a social movement
becoming a champion of the people
never flinching never losing hope
another becomes a cynic their idealism attacked
from all sides as they lose their innocence
another becomes a mouthpiece & apologist
for the unelected rulers of some city
or state or nation
while another sits poring over books
searching for some truth
searching for salvation
becoming a recluse
another travels around the world
also searching
as another is lost in a world of their own-

others find Christ or the Buddha
or Krishna or Mohammad
or the Bible or Qur'an or Torah
the Dharma the Karma Sutra
the Upanishads the Kabbalah
Tarot cards Nordic-Runes Astrology
Pyramid Power or the power of crystals
candle power Wicca becoming neopagans
finding faith in something or someone
of some self-appointed prophet
benevolent & wise
or deceitful & greedy & lustful
or just plain mad
hearing imaginary voices
of God or angels

while others lose all faith
in any preachings & holy teachings
or in anything or anyone at all
loving & trusting no one-

No end to disappointment
no end to regret
no end to heartache
no end to sadness
no end to loneliness
no end to melancholy blues
no end to tears
no end to sleepless nights
no end to sad faced dawns-

No end no end no end
always ending
the beginning becomes an ending
each ending wears us down
each ending gives us strength
each ending leaves us hopeless
each ending leaves us empty
each ending is a new beginning
we are at our wits end
we are on top of the world
falling in & out of love
feeding our hearts & souls
a feast awaits us
lean days await us-
