SURREALISM : ART OF RENE MAGRITTE,MAURICE CHAGALL, SALVADOR DALI, YERKA

PAINTING BY RENE MAGRITTE " THIS IS NOT A PIPE"

PAINTING BY RENE MAGRITTE
Posted by Hello

Books: Just read a book on Surrealist artist Rene Magritte( 1898-1967) by A.M. Hammacher(1995) some great reproductions & possibly a good entrance point for someone who has never really read much about Surrealism & Dada.

ART:
SURREALISM:

Breton saw the unconscious

as the wellspring

of the imagination.

He ( BRETON ) defined genius in terms
of accessibility

to this normally untapped realm,

which,
he believed, could be attained

by poets and painters alike. Surrealism and Rene Magritte- oh sinner man

SURREALIST - TRISTAN TZARA :

Every page must explode, either by profound heavy seriousness, the whirlwind, poetic frenzy, the new, the eternal, the crushing joke, enthusiasm for principles, or by the way in which it is printed. On the one hand a tottering world in flight, betrothed to the glockenspiel of hell, on the other hand: new men. Rough, bouncing, riding on hiccups. Behind them a crippled world and literary quacks with a mania for improvement.

I say unto you: there is no beginning and we do not tremble, we are not sentimental. We are a furious Wind, tearing the dirty linen of clouds and prayers, preparing the great spectacle of disaster, fire, decomposition. We will put an end to mourning and replace tears by sirens screeching from one continent to another. Pavilions of intense joy and widowers with the sadness of poison.

Chagall- Berlioz, fantasy on " The Tempest"

And here is a definition of Surrealism
which maybe completely & utterly unhelpful from Surrealist.com

Sur - re - al - ism (n.) -(often l.c.) a style of art
and literature developed principally in the
20th century, stressing the subconscious
or nonrational significance of imagery arrived at
by automatism or the exploitation of
chance effects, unexpected juxtapositions, etc.
---------- Surrealism :
The surrealist movement of visual art and literature,
flourished in Europe between World Wars I and II.
Surrealism grew principally out of
the earlier Dada movement, which before
World War I produced works of
anti-art that deliberately defied reason;
but Surrealism's emphasis was not
on negation but on positive expression.
The movement represented a reaction against
what its members saw as
the destruction wrought by the "rationalism"
that had guided European culture
and politics in the past and
had culminated in the horrors of
World War I.

----- ------------------------------------------

According to the major spokesman of the movement,
poet and critic André Breton, who published
"The Surrealist Manifesto" in 1924,
Surrealism was a means of reuniting
conscious and unconscious realms
of experience so completely,
that the world of dream and fantasy
would be joined
to the everyday rational world
in "an absolute reality,
a surreality."
